The (Virtual) Science Gong Show - COVID19 Edition!
July 16th, 2020, 6-8pm on Facebook Live

Project Bridge in association with Nerd Nite present: The Science Gong Show - COVID19 Edition!

Science. Gongs. From the comfort of your couch. Need we say more?

The goal of the "Gong Show" is to excite the public about scientific research while giving scientists the opportunity to practice their broad communication skills. To do this, presenters give a 3-minute elevator pitch that succinctly describes a subject relating to COVID19.

Format:
- Present your research to non-scientists via Zoom/Facebook Live in a way that is exciting and educational
- 3 minute presentations - No slides (but props are encouraged!)
- Jargon/technical language is ok as long as it is necessary and you define it well

The Science Gong Show - Neuroscience Night!
March 8th, 2020

Project Bridge in association with the Neuroscience Outreach Group (NOG) present: The Science Gong Show - Neuroscience Night!

Can you explain your neuroscience-related research in under 3 minutes without using any technical jargon? Here's your chance to try!

The goal of the "Gong Show" is to excite the public about scientific research while giving scientists the opportunity to practice their broad communication skills. To do this, presenters give a 3-minute elevator pitch that succinctly describes what they do. If they use too much jargon, go off on a tangent, or the audience gets bored, listeners can "gong" the presenter with provided noise makers! If you are "gonged": Don't panic! You won't get pulled off stage by a hook; you will just have to stop and explain more clearly.

The Colorado Science Policy Summit
October 3rd, 2019

Are you interested in learning about how scientists can become involved and affect policy?

Join Project Bridge and Science in Action from Colorado State University for our Colorado Science Policy Summit.

You will hear from legislators and scientists currently engaged in policy development to learn about the process of developing bills and where and when and how scientists can get involved. You will leave the summit with a tool set of actionable advocacy steps you can utilize to be more engaged. The day will end with a networking opportunity to interact with other policy minded scientists and your representatives.

Summit Goals:
  1. Learn how the Colorado political system functions and how and where scientists can engage through workshops and case studies led by lawmakers
  2. Gain a tool set of actionable advocacy steps to engage in policy
  3. Grow a network of early career scientists throughout the state, State representatives, and stakeholders

Science in the News - The Opioid Epidemic: Biology, Public Health, and Policy
April 18th, 2019

In 1803, morphine is isolated from the poppy plant for the first time, a miracle pain reliever with a high risk of addiction. In 1995, Oxycontin is released by Purdue Pharma as a less addictive pain reliever and hailed as a medical breakthrough. In 2017, the Department of Health and Human Services declares the opioid addiction epidemic to be a public health crisis. Today, Americans are more likely to die from opioid overdose than from a vehicle crash. How have we found ourselves in this epidemic? How do opioids work, who takes them, and what can this teach us about addiction and recovery?

Science in the News - The history and science of vaccines: what, how, WHO, why?
February 21st, 2019

In 2000 the United States declared measles was eradicated thanks to the MMR vaccine; two decades later, the World Health Organization has reported that outbreaks are on the rise. Vaccines are a powerful tool for protecting ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities from disease. But many fear that they carry their own risks, and don’t participate. So what are the facts, and what are the stakes? Join three local scientists from the University of Colorado to discuss the history, science, and medicine of vaccinations.
